Addressing the challenges faced by menstruating students and staff around period poverty and access to period care, Vik Brown raised the idea about placing period products within the Teeside University toilets to support period dignity. With 84% of students reporting that periods negatively impact their attendance and academic performance, the need for support was urgent.
Teesside responded by launching a Period Dignity Task Force, focused on creating real, lasting change. They teamed up with TOTM as their preferred period care provider, drawn to our commitment to sustainability, inclusivity, and wellbeing.
The impact was immediate and wide-reaching. With 78% of students reporting the direct benefits from having free, sustainable period care on campus whilst praising the initiatives environmental benefits.
The initiative’s success led to period care provisions from 19 to over 40 toilet facilities across all campuses and strengthened Teesside’s Equity, Diversity and Inclusion (EDI) policy. The university proudly became the first to receive the TOTM Period Positive University badge, highlighting its dedication to accessible and eco-friendly period care. Findings from the project were even shared at the Health Psychology Conference, showing the broader community impact of addressing period poverty head-on.
Free period products are available at Falmouth University and the University of Exeter at the Penryn Campus.
The response has been overwhelmingly positive. Students and staff have welcomed the initiative, which is helping to tackle period poverty and ensure everyone has access to essential products when needed. Feedback continues to highlight the difference this support makes to daily campus life.
By taking proactive steps to provide free period care, FXPlus and both universities are creating a more inclusive environment, supporting wellbeing, and championing period dignity for its community.
PJ Walton, JLL Account Director at Regular Cleaning, saw an opportunity to introduce free period care at the Bentall Centre to support both staff and visitors. Partnering with TOTM, a discreet and practical solution was launched. Posters in washrooms directed people to request products from cleaning or security staff, with supplies stored on cleaners’ trolleys for easy, private access.
